Conservation

Most published papyri are kept between glass; some recent additions are put between perspex. The unpublished papyri are kept between paper folders.

Inventarisation

There is a full inventory in the Library of all texts (on paper cards) and a shorter list on A4 paper. The glass plates are numbered in series according to their size; the paper folders are in different series : Pap. Gr., Pap. FF and Pap. Demotic (some are kept in Select Boxes, but this does not form part of their numbering system).

Work

1. Further publication of all Petrie papyri is planned in Leuven, under direction of W. Clarysse [ willy.clarysse@arts.kuleuven.ac.be ]. 2. Publication of all Greek texts from the Lycopolites is planned in Dublin by B. MacGing [ bmcging@sun1.tcd.ie ].

Highlights

P.Petrie II 50 : extensive fragments of Plato's Laches; when they were first published, this was by far the eldest Plato manuscript (third cent. BC) [ LDAB 3836 ]

P.Petrie III 144 : eye witness account of the third Syrian war, perhaps by Ptolemy III himself [ LDAB 2602 ]

Pap. Gr. 274 is an official letter mentioning the revolt against the Ptolemies of the Egyptian Chaonnophris. It was recently republished with extensive commentary by B. McGing, Revolt Egyptian Style. Internal Opposition to Ptolemaic Rule, Archiv für Papyrusforschung 43 (1997), pp.273-314

History

1. Papyri from Petrie's excavation Gurob 1889. About 300 published papyri, most of them first published in P.Petrie, 500 unpublished Greek papyri and lots of demotic fragments 2. Papyri from Petrie's excavation Rifeh 1907. About 50 Greek papyri. 3. A few Oxyrhynchus papyri and a few Hibeh papyri, given to Dublin by the Egypt Exploration Fund; (cf. R. Coles, Location-list, 1974). 5. Byzantine Greek and Coptic papyri bought in Luxor in 1882 by Ch. Graves, bishop of Limerick. 6. One text from the monastery of Labla archive 7. Papyri from the Roman and Byzantine period of uncertain origin. 8. Some ostraca from different periods of uncertain origin.
