Work

For work in progress on the hieratic papyri, see now G. Rosati, Akten des 21. Intern. Papyrologenkongresses Berlin 1995, Stuttgart-Leipzig 1997, pp.867-869. The Firenze part of the Thmuis papyrus is in the course of edition; for a plate, see the homepage of the Institute http://www.ino.it/~luca/papiri/pap_it.html. For a list of the papyri of this collection published outside the PSI series, cf. López García, Comunicazioni dell' Istituto Papirologico G. Vitelli 9 (2011), p. 79-130

Highlights

History

Papyrology was initiated in Firenze and in Italy thanks to Girolamo Vitelli, who in 1901 published the Papiro Fiorentino 1 in the journal 'Atene e Roma'. In the early 20th century Vitelli travelled across Egypt, buying papyri and organizing archaeological activities. This became one of the main purposes of the Italian Society for Research of Greek and Latin Papyri in Egypt, established in Firenze in June 1908. Excavatons were undertaken regularly, especially in the 1930 : Hermoupolis, Oxyrhynchos, Tebtynis, Ankyronpolis, Antinoupolis. While the recovery of papyri through digging activities was ongoing, a further relevant number of papyri was purchased on the antiquarian market in Egypt, through sellers as Farag Ali, Ali el-Arabi, Nahman, Tanos. The papyri were published and finally sold to the Biblioteca Laurenziana, where they were retained and preserved. This allowed more excavations and purchases up to 1943. At present the Istituto Papirologico G. Vitelli is equipped for proper preservation of the papyri in its own location. Part of the texts published in PSI XIII and most of those in PSI XIV and XV are now preserved at the institute.

Papyri in Firenze are listed by Iginio Crisci, La collezione dei papiri di Firenze, in: Proceedings of the 12th International Congress of Papyrology, Toronto 1970, p. 89-95, in which 386 Papiri Fiorentini (P.Flor.) and 1142 Papiri della Società Italiana (PSI) are mentioned.

The collection of the Istituto Papirologico 'G. Vitelli' contains not only Greek and Latin papyri, but also texts in Egyptian (hieroglyphic, hieratic, demotic, coptic), Arabic and Syriac (LDAB 113532).

Among the hieroglyphic texts two large hieratic rolls from Tebtynis have to be mentioned. One belongs to the Book of the Fayum (LDAB 97823), the other contains a mythological manual (LDAB 56092).

For demotic texts, see now I. Andorlini, La collezione dei papiri demotici dell’Istituto Papirologico “Girolamo Vitelli” a Firenze, in: Res severa verum gaudium. Festschrift für Karl-Theodor Zauzich, Leuven 2004, pp.13-26

Highlights are PSI XIII 1296 (christian parchment from Antinoe; LDAB 61688), PSI XIII 1304 (Hellenica Oxyrynchia; LDAB 59482), PSI XIV 1390 (Euphorion; LDAB 59773), PSI XIV 1383 (Hesiodos, Catalogue of women; LDAB 60112) and an ostracon with a poem of Sappho (PSI XIII 1300; LDAB 62716). There are also illustrated papryi (PSI XIII 1370, XIV 1450-1452) and a medical treatise (LDAB 59149). More than 3000 fragments of all periods remain unpublished.

Some fragments of the Ammon archive, which can be joined to papyri in Cologne and Duke, are published in P.Ammon I and 2.
