Fonts

Trismegistos occasionally uses foreign alphabets, such as Greek, Demotic or Coptic, for certain information (e.g. place names). We use the fonts developed by the IFAO (Institut français d'Archéologie Orientale), which can be downloaded from the IFAO website for free. Direct links to the downloadable font files are provided below.

We are currently working on a complete conversion of Trismegistos to Unicode, including Greek, Coptic and Demotic entries; we hope to have this ready soon. In the meantime, we provide links to the non-Unicode versions of the IFAO fonts, even if the IFAO itself does not offer those anymore.

Greek
http://www.ifao.egnet.net/publications/outils/polices/ (Go to the bottom of the page, and choose the second "Police IFAO Grec", which is labelled "TTF", not the PS type 1 !!).
Note! These are ttf-encoded font files; they work with both Windows and Apple MacIntosh computers, and are fully compatible with the Trismegistos database. We have created these from the original versions of the IFAO, which were PS1-encoded files. In case you already have the original IFAOGrec font installed, it may be necessary to remove them and replace them with these newer versions.
Note! IFAOGrec has the same encoding as the SuperGreek font family; if you have SuperGreek and would prefer to use that, you do not have to install IFAOGrec, the database will automatically use SuperGreek to show the Greek text if you do not have IFAOGrec installed.

Coptic
coptic.zip
This version of the font IFAOCopte was created by the IFAO and can be used on both Windows and Apple MacIntosh platforms.
Note! This font is no longer offered for download by the IFAO website, since they have now a newer, Unicode-compatible version of the font IFAOCopte. This unicode version, however, does not yet work with the Trismegistos database, since ours is not yet converted to Unicode. Use the older version, which can be downloaded through the link above.

Demotic
demotic.zip
This version of the font IFAOtimes resembles the fonts Times and Times New Roman, but with additional symbols and diacritics to be used for transliterations of Egyptian (Demotic, Hieroglyphic, Hieratic). It was created by the IFAO, and we have converted it to a TTF-font which can be used on both Windows and Apple MacIntosh platforms.
Note! This font is no longer offered for download by the IFAO website, since they have now a newer, Unicode-compatible version of the font IFAOtimes. This unicode version, however, does not work with the Trismegistos database, since ours is not yet converted to Unicode. Use the older version of IFAOtimes, which can be downloaded through the link above.

Installation instructions - Download the font files using the links above; the downloads are compresssed folders in zip-format, which should be decompressed before they can be used.
- Apple: if you are using Mac OS X 10.2 or above, they can be decompressed automatically; double-click the zip-file and you will get a new folder containing the font files. On other systems (OS 8.6 or 9), you can use the application Stuffit Expander to decompress the zip-files. Once the files are decompressed you can install the fonts by either dragging them to the fonts folder (Library > Fonts) or with the application 'Font Book' (Applications > Font Book), which is a built-in application of Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) / 10.3 (Panther) / 10.4 (Tiger) / 10.5 (Leopard).
- Windows: the compressed zip-files can be decompressed using WinZip, which is a freeware application. It is probably installed on your computer by default. Once decompressed you can install the fonts by dragging them to the Windows > Fonts folder, or through the Fonts application in your Configuration Panel.
