TOMATOR

The TOMATOR ('Trismegistos One-Mode generATOR') is a Filemaker 13 tool to convert two-mode networks to one-mode. It is not the fastest tool available, and for our large datasets we still use R and the algorithms developed for that. But it is probably easier than R, and as a nice plus it also preserves, in the one-mode edgelist, information about the entity establishing the connection in the two-mode network. This can be handy to create timelines in Gephi, for example.

How does it work?

Open the TOMATOR.
Make sure you have a two-mode edgelist, in Excel (as .xls(x) or .csv) or in Filemaker (as .fmp12). This should have two columns or fields: the first containing the entity you want to make a one-mode network of, the second containing the entity forming the link. An example: you are studying the archive of Horos son of Nechoutes, and want to see who appears together with whom in the documents that he preserved. In TM Text 2348, 21 people are mentioned, so you’ll need twenty-one rows with the TM Per IDs (48, 24, ...) and the TM Tex ID (2348) in the second column. Repeat that for all the other records in the archive (and all the people mentioned in them - we counted 1,052 on 25 April 2015). Do not worry about taking out isolates or getting rid of double occurrences of people in a single text. The TOMATOR will take care of those.
Import this into the TOMATOR’s two-mode layout: the person IDs go into the field ‘entity 1’ (what is being connected), the text IDs go into the field ‘entity 2’ (what establishes the connection).
Press the magic button.
Wait. How long depends on several parameters: the number of records in your two-mode edgelist; the number of connections in the one-mode network resulting from the process; the speed of your computer. The 1,052 records of the Nechoutes archive produced a one-mode network of 8,413 connections after 1 minute and 45 seconds on a MacBook Air with a 1,7 GHz Intel Core i7 processor and 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 memory. Compared to R, this is slow, but then again, we never claimed it was faster than R, just easier. If there are many combinations to be created for a large data set, the TOMATOR make take a day or even more...* However, the TOMATOR keeps track of which texts the relations are attested in, information you lose when working in R. *Please note that there is no feedback about the progress of the script.
Once the script is done running, it automatically switches to the one-mode layout, where you’ll find a record for each relation between two individuals in a text.
Export this one-mode list as a .csv file. For the one-mode network itself, you will only need the connected individuals ('entity 1_A and entity 1_B'). But, as mentioned before, having the text ID ('entity 2'), through which the connection is established, is pretty useful when you want to pull in extra information about the relations, such as date, provenance, ...
Import the one-mode list into your preferred networky software and party hard.
