The papyri are stored unglazed in folders and kept in four boxes in the Department of Special Collections.

The papyri were examined by Welles and a preliminary inventory was done by John Shelton. U. Kaplony-Heckel examined the demotic pieces in the mid 1980’s and provided a brief inventory and a description of the demotic papyri.

There is also an unpublished (?) manuscript of John Shelton in the archives discussing G 45b, a "prophecy of Jewish disturbance" dated to the 2d cent. AD

With the exception of P. Hibeh 131 and P. Oxy 910 (cf. Coles, Location-list, 1974) the papyri came to the university library by way of a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Stewart Marshall in 1953. The letter of donation states that the papyri had been acquired in London in 1946 from a "China man" who was at the time a post graduate student in London. He in turn had acquired them from Selim Hassan, Professor of Egyptology in Cairo University. According to Hassan, the papyri were in the main excavated at Giza and date to ca. 200 BC. They are clearly cartonnage, but many of the papyri are Roman and Byzantine in date. There are 113 Greek, 16 Coptic and 37 Arabic and 117 Demotic papyri, mostly very fragmentary. Of the latter, there are perhaps 4 literary fragments, 7 letters and 21 private texts.

Two papyri, P. Hibeh 131, a letter, ca. 245 BCE and P. Oxy 910, a lease, AD 197 are part of the collection of the Stanford University Museum . Records indicate that they were transferred to the library but cannot be found at the present time.
