Inventarisation

An inventory is already prepared for the separate pieces of papyri and will be prepared for the small fragments (see below). The web site will give access to the published material (with bibliography, translation); 600dpi images will be available.

History

1. Size The collection contains four pieces of papyri and a group of about 200 small fragments. Most of them are fragments of the same papyri. 2. Acquisitions The collection was acquired by the Department of Philology from various dealers in 1980 (four documentary papyri, of which two are Greek of the Ptolemaic period [Papyri Universitatis Cretensis 1 and 2], one Coptic [Papyrus Universitatis Cretensis 3] and one Arabic [Papyrus Universitatis Cretensis 4], thanks to B.G. Mandilaras' suggestion and N. Panayiotakis' support) and in 1998 (circa 150 cartonnage small fragments written in Greek and dated in the Ptolemaic period) 3. Distribution - Language: mostly Greek, one Coptic and one Arabic piece. - Chronology: mostly Ptolemaic period (cartonnage papyri), some from the Byzantine and Arabic period. - Geography: mostly unknown. - Genres: documentary papyri and one school exercise.
