‘Babington’s Hypereides’ (LDAB 2423)

History

About 57 papyrus fragments; only 1 has been published. Languages: c. 45 Coptic ; 1 demotic; c. 10 Greek; 1 Arabic? Date: ? BCE-8th CE? Provenance: Thebes, where some of them were allegedly found by Joseph Arden? Literary: 1 Greek; 4 Coptic. Non-literary: 41 Coptic; 9 Greek; 1 demotic; 1 Arabic?

1889: Magdalene Babington, the widow of Churchill Babington (1821-1889; WWWEg.3:: 23), Fellow of St John’s and Disney Professor of Archaeology, bequeathed his collection of papyri to the College. They appear to have been collected originally by the barrister and traveller Joseph Arden (1799-1879; WWWEg.3: 18-19) who travelled to Egypt in 1846-7 (some of the MSS are recorded as having been ‘found’ by him in Thebes in 1847).
