The Monument of Gaius Appuleius Diocles the Charioteer (TM 271831) is an honorary inscription on an unfortunately lost monument in Rome (the photograph depicts a representation of Diocles, but not that of his monument). The text survives thanks to a very detailed and accurate edition by Johannes Smetius who has seen the original in 1678.
The monument was erected by Diocles' fans, probably not too long after his death in AD 146. It describes his career as a charioteer in detail, with his switches from the Whites to the Greens and the Blues, and with all the victories and the enormous fortune of 36 million sestertiae that he gathered. Able to feed the entire population of Rome for a year, he must have been one of the richest athletes of all time.
