With few exceptions the papyri and other writing materials in the collection are kept in glass frames. A description of the preservation conducted in the years 1992-1995 with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities by Peter van Minnen can be found on the homepage. About 200 items had been cleaned and framed previously by William H. Willis.
Virtually all papyri and other writing materials have been catalogued with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities by Peter van Minnen and Suzanne D. Corr in the years 1993-1995. The records are available through the homepage and can be browsed in various ways or searched by keywords. Browsing takes 2-3 steps to get at a record and 1 more step to get at a scan. There are no transcriptions, and with one exception no translations are provided. Handwritten records are available on site. They consist of rough transcriptions made by William H. Willis and Peter van Minnen mainly. All papyri and other writing materials were digitized with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities in the years 1993-1996. Scans uniformly made at 72 and 150 dpi can be accessed through the homepage , where one can also find out how the scans were made, Scans made at 300 and 600 dpi can be requested through Josuah Sosin.
Relatively few items have been published in bookform, notably two installments of the papyri belonging to the Ammon archive (P.Ammon I and II).
Several groups of documents have been selected for publication by John F. Oates and others. A tentative list is available through the homepage. Scholars interested in publishing other items from the collection found through the homepage are requested to contact John F. Oates. There is no restrictive policy.
Apart from the substantial papyri belonging to the Ammon archive the following may be singled out: the Comedia Dukiana, a substantial part of an early Hellenistic Greek comedy, and by far the earliest Coptic manuscript recording the martyrdom of an otherwise unknown Middle Egyptian village priest. There are also various unpublished magical and early Christian texts in Greek and Coptic of which a summary list is provided through the home page. There are also many other Greek literary papyri.
The papyri and other writing materials in the collection were acquired between 1942 and 1996. Each descriptive record provides information on the date of acquisition and the source. The checkered history of the acquisition can be gauged from a consolidated list on the homepage. The bulk of the Greek material was acquired from Anton and Michael Fackelmann and mainly derives from second-century B.C. cartonnage. Some archives such as that of Apollonios the strategos of early second-century A.D. Apollonopolis Heptakomias, Claudia Isidora alias Apia of third-century Oxyrhynchus, Aurelia Charite and Aurelius Nearchides of fourth-century Hermopolis, Aurelius Ammon scholastikos of fourth-century Panopolis and the third-century nome archive of the Bubastites are also represented in the collection. The geographical range is very wide and can be gauged from a list of placenames . There are e.g. 4 papyri from Kellis in the Dakhleh (inv. 9-12). There is also a bifolium from a Shenutean codex .
